West Wallsend Swim Centre to reopen to lap swimmers

Lappers will be able to swim indoors at West Wallsend Swim Centre, with the centre set to reopen its doors from Monday 15 June 2020.

Similar to Charlestown, lappers will be required to call the centre in advance to book their lap session. Additional easing of restrictions will now allow three lappers per lane.

Council’s Manager Brad Sutton said the popularity of swimming as a form of exercise has been evident over the past few weeks.

“Sessions at Charlestown and Speers Point swim centres have been booked out daily, demonstrating the desire from our community to be in the water,” Mr Sutton said.

“West Wallsend Swim Centre opened up recently for squad training, which has also proven popular with the community, and I think there will be even more people in the community keen to get in the water now that indoor fitness facilities have been given the green light to operate."

“We will also recommence some of our programs, including Aqua Fitness, with restrictions in place. Details will be released on Council’s website in the coming weeks.”

Mr Sutton said with the reopening of West Wallsend Swim Centre and the easing of restrictions to allow three swimmers per lane, Council will close Speers Point Swim Centre from Friday 19 June 2020.

“Speers Point Swim Centre is usually closed for winter but with the demand so high for lappers to utilise our outdoor swim centres, a decision was made to temporarily reopen this facility,” Mr Sutton said.

“With the easing of restrictions to allow indoor swim centres to reopen to the public and three lappers permitted per lane, we believe swimmers will be adequately catered for between Charlestown and West Wallsend Swim Centres.”

Restrictions are in place at all facilities. Swimmers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the terms and conditions before booking in.

Bookings are required for all sessions. Bookings can be made by contacting the centres directly between 9am-noon daily.
