See You At The Civic!
THERE ARE PLENTY OF GREAT REASONS TO VISIT THE CIVIC THEATRE THIS MONTH – COMEDY, MUSICALS, OPERA, DRAMA AND MORE!
Opening in August, The Sapphires is an uplifting Australian classic, full of comedy, heart and romance, together with unforgettable soul music. Set in the heady days of the late 60s, a quartet of talented young singers from a remote aboriginal mission are discovered and guided by a kind-hearted, soul-loving manager. Written and directed by Tony Briggs, this multi-award-winning musical play was inspired by the remarkable true story of Briggs' mother.
The laughs keep coming with Civic Theatre and Big Dog Comedy presenting another comedy lineup for Civic Comedy Club on 12 August. Serving up a smorgasbord of brilliant comedians for some funny-bone tickling of the highest order, venture out for a night of laughs in the Playhouse.
Then later this month, Opera Australia returns to Newcastle with The Barber of Seville. Beyond haircuts and beard trims, the Barber of Seville is the city's matchmaking maestro! Almaviva is wealthy, stealthy, and head over heels. Rosina is witty, pretty, and equally smitten. She's also betrothed. Time to call on Fi-ga-ro! Figaro! Figaro! The stage is set for comic chaos and irrepressibly funny characters - this is opera at its light-hearted, effervescent best. Opera Australia's finest voices assemble with a live orchestra and a local children's chorus, the Hunter Trebles, to deliver an instantly familiar score.
Next month, get ready for Civic Theatre to be taken over by New Annual Festival with some incredible shows, including Bell Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors, Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub's Grappling for the Edge and Airness by Knock + Run Theatre Co. In addition, Civic Theatre has two special feature productions for New Annual - Radial and Trolleys.
Filmed using a circular camera track, Radial is a live improvisation performance by Back to Back Theatre captured as a continuous sequence, combined with intimate depictions of single individuals in dedicated spaces across Newcastle. Once complete, Civic Theatre will screen the resulting film for all to see!
Trolleys by Shaun Parker and Company is part dance, part ballet and part outdoor spectacle. Five shopping carts randomly appear in a public space. Two meet and fall in love. A lone cart grapples to find a friend while three others revolt and ignite a dance of anarchy.
