Iconic photos and stories from Australia’s outback, bush and coast are set to go on exhibition in Lake Macquarie as part of a new touring show by the National Museum of Australia and Australian Geographic.

A Portrait of Australia: Stories through the lens of Australian Geographic, at SEEN@Swansea from Saturday 5 June to Sunday 1 August, will feature stunning photos from the Australian Geographic archive.

National Museum Director Dr Matthew Trinca said the exhibition combined the National Museum’s exhibition and curatorial expertise with Australian Geographic’s “unparalleled photographic coverage of Australia’s land, nature and people”.

“This exhibition celebrates the bush, the outback, the coast and the people who live and work there,” he said.

Lake Macquarie City Council Community Museum Officer Meg O’Donnell said the exhibition transported visitors to some of the most rugged and remote parts of Australia.

“Each photograph is beautiful in its own right, but the magic of the exhibition comes from the narratives told by each portrait,” she said.

“Tales of community, mateship and extraordinary wonders have been written by some of Australian Geographic’s best writers over the last 30 years.”

Entry to the exhibition, open 10am-2pm daily, is by gold coin donation.
