More than 31,000 hours clocked to make Lake Mac more sustainable

This month Sustainable Neighbourhoods celebrate ten years of making the City a more environmentally sustainable place to live.

The not-for-profit community group has collectively reached more than 100,000 people through 1,427 events since the Alliance started in 2011.

Lake Macquarie City Council’s Manager Community Partnerships Andrew Bryant said Sustainable Neighbourhoods bring the community together to address local sustainability and social challenges.

“It’s inspiring to see an active, skilled and supported citizen group working together towards a common vision,” Mr Bryant said.

“There’s always opportunities to get involved and make a difference with your neighbours.”

Sustainable Neighbourhood volunteers have contributed more than 31,000 hours in the past decade.

Sustainable Neighbourhoods volunteer Steve Dewar said it’s a wonderful way to learn, share and care for our environment while also having fun and being social.

“The program is a great way to get involved in a local project, meet your community, learn new skills, and create change,” Mr Dewar said.

“We do tree planting days, pollination projects, community garden working bees, an annual Waste to Art exhibition, Repair Cafe events and much more.”

Lake Macquarie Mayor Cr Kay Fraser said it’s fantastic to see Lake Macquarie residents act on local environmental, sustainability and community initiatives.

“When we work together we can make a big difference to the place we live,” Cr Fraser said.

“And we can help create a better planet for future generations.”

Sustainable Neighbourhoods is an initiative of Lake Macquarie City Council. Go to sustainableneighbourhoods.org.au for more information and to find out how to get involved.
