Audiences will follow the Yellow Brick Road this November when more than 50 young performers aged 8-15 years from across Newcastle and the Hunter take the stage in Hive Youth Theatre's 2025 production of The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition.

Prepare to be swept away into the magical land of Oz as young Dorothy journeys from her Kansas home to the dazzling Emerald City, encountering good and wicked witches, talking animals, and the unforgettable Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion. This beloved story has captivated audiences for generations, and now Newcastle's brightest young talent will bring the magic to life on the Civic Theatre Playhouse stage.

With its timeless message that "there's no place like home", this energetic production captures all the wonder, humour, and heart of the original story. From Dorothy's first steps into the colourful world of Oz to her emotional journey back home, audiences will be transported into a world of imagination where dreams really do come true.

Directed by the talented duo of Bridget Ponman and Francesco Bertoni, the production brings together the next generation of local talent in what promises to be a spectacular showcase of youthful energy and theatrical excellence. The young cast has been rehearsing tirelessly to perfect every song, dance, and magical moment that make The Wizard of Oz such an enduring classic.

Adding to the production's professional quality, the performance is supported by the expert creative crew from Equip Multi-Media, who will deliver dazzling sound and lighting design that will transform the Civic Playhouse into the enchanted land of Oz. With vibrant costumes that bring each character to life, spectacular visuals that will delight the eye, and a cast brimming with energy and imagination, the show promises an enchanting experience for audiences of all ages.

"Every year our students surprise us with their passion, teamwork, and creativity," says co-director Bridget Ponman.

"The Wizard of Oz is the perfect story to showcase what young performers can achieve when they're supported by a strong community and professional guidance."

The production represents not just a theatrical event, but a celebration of the growth and development of Newcastle's young performing arts community. Each rehearsal brings new discoveries as these talented young people learn the craft of theatre, develop confidence, and forge lasting friendships.

Since its inception over a decade ago, Hive Youth Theatre has blossomed into a vibrant hub for young performers to discover their voices, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of the arts. The organisation has become an integral part of Newcastle's cultural landscape, providing quality performing arts education and opportunities for young people across the region.
