NAIDOC Week celebrations in 2016

The unique history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will be celebrated in Lake Mac during NAIDOC Week, 3-10 July.

Lake Macquarie City Council Aboriginal Community Development Officer Maree Edwards said grants of up to $2500 were on offer for not-for-profit organisations and schools to host events.

“This is a chance to share our rich history, which spans tens of thousands of years, and elevate those Indigenous Australians who are making our nation a better place,” Ms Edwards said.

Ms Edwards, a Wonnarua woman, said smaller grants of up to $750 are also on offer.

“We’re asking organisations to host an event that teaches cultural experiences and spreads knowledge and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders,” Ms Edwards said.

The theme for NAIDOC Week 2022 is ‘Get up! Stand up! Show up!’, which encourages the community to fight for systemic change and to keep rallying around mob, Elders and communities.

“It’s also a time to celebrate the many who have driven and led change in our communities over generations – they have been the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights,” Ms Edwards said.

Manager Community Partnerships Andrew Bryant encouraged locals to apply for the grants and help celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

“With COVID-19 restrictions easing, it means we can see more people gather, learn and connect,” Mr Bryant said.

Applications for grant funding close 5pm, Friday 25 March.
