Enough Drama to Fill Your Calendar!
Off the back of a festival-filled February, the Civic Theatre Newcastle is keeping the entertainment options flowing, with their 2021 Season rolling-on to stellar theatrical productions that are sure to entertain.
At the top of the bill in April is a fun night out – a show described simply as “Terrific” by The Australian. Margaret Fulton the Musical brims with love and energy like chicken soup for the soul. Genuinely heart-warming, with a slew of catchy tunes, this musical production will have your toes tapping along. Suitable for all ages, it’s our pick for a family night out. Throw down some delicious pre-theatre pizzas from Civic Digest (the café at the Theatre) to keep those hunger pains at bay – this is a show about food and cooking, after all!
May takes a turn into the satirical with The Gospel According to Paul. Jonathan Biggins makes a welcomed return to Newcastle after a sold-out season in 2019. Back by popular demand, Biggins once again transforms into Paul Keating – a visionary, reformer and rabble-rouser. Full of intelligence and wit, it's a funny, insightful and occasionally poignant portrait of Keating.
Hot off the satire heels, yet keeping with the political theme, is the most shocking and wickedly funny, Animal Farm. Produced by Brisbane-based company Shake & Stir, Animal Farm is a bold work that holds more accolades than there’s room to list. George Orwell’s intensely powerful novel – adapted for the live stage – allegorizes and satirizes communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield. Who’s ready to ‘pig in’ to avoid the disappointment of missing this theatrical event of the year?
Musicals and theatre hits are just a sample of what’s in store for 2021. The Civic Theatre’s annual Season is like a tasting plate of live performance. Fourteen shows have been carefully curated for the annual program, each bringing unique experiences through sharing stories, people and places. If you’ve been missing those special evenings out seeing live shows, Civic Theatre offers a discount for any three (or more) Season shows that are booked as a package. Beyond a great night out with friends or family, package benefits include ticket savings, free parking, discounted food and beverage, flexible ticket options and dibs on the best seats in the majestic auditorium.
Gone are the days of needing to hit the highway to experience outstanding performances. Season 2021 brings big events from Sydney Dance Company, Opera Australia, and both Sydney and Melbourne Comedy Festivals. Let Civic Theatre bring the drama to you this year!
