The many innovative and sustainable services Lake Macquarie City Council provides to the community are being highlighted as part of Local Government Week, 1-8 August 2022.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said Local Government Week was about showcasing the hard work Council does in the community and celebrating diverse services beyond roads, rates or rubbish.

“We are committed to listening to the needs of our ever-evolving community and providing services to meet those needs,” Cr Fraser said.

“We’re proud to have delivered more than 100 services to more than 213,000 residents in the past year.

“Residents are encouraged to keep a close eye on our social media channels this week, as we post videos, photos and facts to showcase the wide variety of events and services we offer.

“From providing digital mentors in our libraries, to hosting major parenting expos and inclusive community workshops, and teaching swim safety to school students during our Lifeguard’s off-season, Council is helping residents in new and increasingly innovative ways.”

Council’s commitment to promoting sustainable living can be seen through partnerships with local Sustainable Neighbourhood Groups, which have hosted Repair Cafes that have stopped more than 300 items from reaching landfill, so far.

The You’re Kidding Me Expo, which is the biggest parenting event in the Hunter, has expanded over its decade-long history to run free workshops with vital health services to help new and expectant parents.

“Looking forward, our 2022-2023 Operational Plan will see $424.5 million injected into the community, with $174.9 million set to be invested in lifestyle and wellbeing and a further $72.4 million in improving mobility and accessibility,” Cr Fraser said.
