Online screening of 2040 inspires Lake Mac Landcarers this National Volunteer Week
Lake Macquarie Landcare have celebrated National Volunteer Week (18-24 May) by taking things online with a screening of the uplifting and inspiring film, 2040. After the film, participants took part in a live panel discussion featuring the film’s writer and director, Damon Gameau, as well as local practitioners Frances O’Brien (Hunter Intrepid Landcare), and John Schultz (Goolcoola Hereford Farm).
Typically, the network of over 200 Landcare groups celebrate National Volunteer Week with a large gathering of volunteers, guest speakers and catering, though this year the event has moved to a digital format in response to COVID-19 restrictions.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Cr Kay Fraser said “Our volunteers right across our City play such an important role for our community and our local Landcarers are some of the most passionate people when it comes to protecting our environment. It is wonderful that we’re able to celebrate National Volunteer Week with them, even if it is digitally.
”Council’s Landcare Coordinator, Jason Harvey said it was an important time to maintain connection and provide inspiration to the City’s Landcare community, who have been unable to work on their sites or volunteer at the Landcare Resource Centre nursery since March.
“This year to celebrate National Volunteer Week we wanted to inspire conversation and action around climate change, in a positive and uplifting way.” Mr Harvey said.
“By screening 2040, we wanted our volunteers to be able to view their Landcaring efforts within a global context and encourage their input and discussion via the Q and A forum.
The film 2040 explores the idea of what the future would look like if we implemented all the best climate solutions we currently have available.
Different themes covered in the film include energy, transport, marine permaculture and regenerative agriculture.
Held on Wednesday 20 May, the live Q and A session saw panellists discuss topics including the impact of the film, the similarities between Landcaring and regenerative agriculture, and the potential for Landcarers to use mediums such as film to bring their message to the world.
Panellist John Schultz, of Goolcoola Farm in Luskintyre, has transitioned away from traditional farming practices and towards regenerative agriculture over the past three years.
John enjoyed the opportunity to present to the Landcare community, and looks forward to connecting with Landcarers in person when it is safe to do so.
“I’ve relished the chance to be involved in this event. It’s been a great opportunity to explore the shared goals of Landcare and regenerative agriculture, while showing people the benefits of what we’re doing, from soil conservation to carbon sequestering and supporting biodiversity,” Mr Schultz said.
