An extraordinary encounter with a literary giant

Over 80,000 people worldwide have enjoyed this critically acclaimed production that has included sell-out seasons at London’s Lyric Hammersmith, Off Broadway, Edinburgh and The British Library. Heralded by critics worldwide as a “lyrical tour-de-force” this is your chance to experience Bob Kingdom’s electrifying performance as he brings Dylan Thomas’ last lecture tour to life in Anthony Hopkins’ celebrated directorial debut.

Dylan Thomas was born in Wales in 1914 and died in New York in 1953 at the age of 39. Towards the end of his life, he toured America performing his works before sell-out audiences across the country.

Bob Kingdom is one of the UK's most respected writers and performers. Playing a man who wrestled with the psychological conflict between creative talent and self-destructive impulse, Bob Kingdom’s remarkable portrayal of this bardic countryman is tangibly heartfelt and authentic. Audiences have sworn it was the poet himself on stage. Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins’ subtle direction brings both performer and audience together in appreciation of the beauty, the humour, the passion and the wit of this writer.

"Working with him has been a revelation, because I realise how passionately he feels and identifies with Thomas. Bob Kingdom not only identifies with Dylan Thomas but sometimes, and often, the two personalities seem to merge. It is a remarkable performance." - Anthony Hopkins (Director)

"Bob Kingdom's performances and plays are a winning formula that strike gold every time: legendary, entertaining and not to be missed,"- BBC.

“I could have listened to his spellbinding, word wizardry for hours” - The Times (UK)

The Civic Theatre Newcastle, in association with Merrigong Theatre Company and Richard Jordan Productions presents Dylan Thomas: Return Journey on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th August.
