Smart parking meters switched on in Nelson Bay

Nelson Bay is another step closer to quicker, easier parking with the new smart parking meters now switched on in the town centre.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says it’s another step forward for Nelson Bay.

“This new smart parking system has been designed to increase parking spaces and improve safety in Nelson Bay — bringing us in line with other smart cities.

“Funds collected from smart parking will be reinvested into delivering Nelson Bay Next by funding improvements to public domain, landscaping, increased car parking and place activation.

“Residents and visitors will notice changes to parking including new parking meters, number plate recognition instead of paper tickets, parking sensors and a new app. Plus, there’s digital signs on the way to help make finding a park easier.

“And for those who live in Port Stephens, pay rates here or businesses, you may be eligible to register for a Park Free permit. Head to our website at portstephens.nsw.gov.au for details.”

Mayor Palmer said residents, ratepayers and businesses have been signing up to receive free parking in preparation for the new system.

“So far, we’ve already had 7500 people register to receive free parking in the Bay.

“Plus the new system will encourage turnover of parks, meaning even more people will be able to come and support local business after what has been a tough year.”

Council’s Environmental Health and Compliance Coordinator Marc Goodall says there will be a moratorium on some parking fines.

“To get ready for the new system, it’s important to sign up for free parking and download the Park’nPay app as your number plate is your ticket to park.

“We know this is a big change, which is why we’ve put a pause on parking fines within the paid parking area until smart parking is fully operational to make sure everyone has had enough time to learn the new system.

“We’ll also be at the pop up shop at 2/26-28 Donald Street until Wednesday 30 December to help if you want more information or are having trouble with using the app or the Park Free permit portal.”
