Work on 4 new shared pathways will kick off this winter, paving the way to better connectivity and accessibility in Port Stephens.

The new shared pathways will be Avenue of the Allies at Tanilba Bay, stage 1 of the Raymond Terrace levee bank, stage 1 of Nelson Bay Road at Fern Bay and a new path from Mallabula to Lemon Tree Passage.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says the projects have been funded by Port Stephens Council’s PS2020 priority projects fund.

“These 4 shared pathways were identified by our community as a high priority during consultation on the PS2020 projects and again in our Liveability Index.

“We heard that walking, jogging and bike paths that connect houses to shops and parks are a high priority for 55% of all our residents. On the Tilligerry Peninsula, 58% of people rated shared pathways as a high priority.

“We also know that shared pathways make our town centres more accessible and connected for all, which is important for creating healthy and inclusive communities. This is something we’re committed to as a Council.

“After some delays due to COVID-19, I’m excited to see construction of these priority pathways kicking off!”

Medowie local and Central Ward Councillor Chris Doohan says there are more pathways in progress.

“Works are well underway on a new shared path along Medowie Road. The section we’re working on has been funded by PS2020 and Transport for NSW’s Walking and Cycling Program.

“It’s part of a much larger project to complete a 2.5 kilometre shared path in collaboration with developers. This new shared pathway will connect the new Catherine McAuley College with the Medowie town centre, which is a great outcome for the local community.

“In the next financial year we plan to work on the final missing section along Medowie Road between Silver Wattle Drive and Ferodale Road, which will connect to the new houses in the north.

“By working together with developers through voluntary planning agreements, we’ve been able to secure important community infrastructure to improve the lives of Medowie residents,” he said.
