Capping off National Youth Week in 2021, Maitland City Council will be hosting the first of four upcoming dates of skate competition, Maitland Shred, on Saturday 24 April at Harold Gregson Skate Park (174 High Street, Maitland), with the support of Skate Connection.

The event, proudly funded by the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund, will include four categories: skateboard, scooter, and bike in Under 12’s, Under 18’s and Under 24’s age groups, and rollerblading/rollerskating in an Open age group.

Maitland Shred can include novices, more advanced, and even professional skaters, and will also allow local skate companies and local service providers to connect with young people.

Prizes will be awarded for best trick, biggest air and longest grind or manual. Registration for the event is free, with gates opening at 9.30am for a 10.00am start, and finishing up at 4.00pm.

Council’s Coordinator Recreation and Community Planning Emily Livens says, ‘Events like Maitland Shred are important to young people and help them be more physically active and feel better connected to their community.

‘Through consultation sessions, young people have been involved in developing this competition to help best cater the event to suit their needs. We encourage all interested individuals to register and get involved in the upcoming event dates.’

Metford, Rutherford and Lawes Street Skate Park are all scheduled to host competition dates later in the year.

As part of the youth project, Council will be holding mural design and painting events on recreational rebound walls across the city. The first of these events will be held in Gillieston Heights on Saturday 26 May.
