Speers Point, Swansea Swim Centres reopen early

Swansea and Speers Point Swim Centres have opened early this year to cater for growing lap swimming demand.

Both swim centres usually kick off their season to coincide with the September school holidays, but Swim Centre Team Leader Callie Spurr said 2020’s unusual circumstances prompted the decision to open sooner.

“We’re so pleased to be opening Speers Point Swim Centre earlier in the season to help accommodate the high demand for lap swimmers,” Ms Spurr said.

“We’re also excited that our Learn to Swim classes will start again from next term. COVID restrictions haven't allowed for recreational swimming yet, but we’re constantly monitoring the situation and exploring options to allow recreational swimming as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.”

Both Speers Point and Swansea are open for lap swimming without booking. However, visitors might need to wait to enter during busy times due to COVID-related limits to numbers.

Meanwhile, West Wallsend Swim Centre is trialling an opening time of 5am Monday-Friday over the next two months, 30 minutes earlier than normal.

Ms Spurr said staff would monitor early morning pool use during the trial to gauge whether it should continue. Swansea Swim Centre’s early opening coincides with completion of upgrade works on the site, including improvements to the grandstand, a revamped first aid room and a repainted learn to swim pool.

Leisure Operations Coordinator Paul Stone said he was proud of the efforts of swim centre staff throughout the pandemic.

“Charlestown Swim Centre was one of the first in NSW to reopen after the initial closures,” Mr Stone said.

“Running that facility and maintaining a COVID-safe environment is a complex task, made possible by dedicated, passionate staff.”
