Lake Mac goes digital and we need your help!

Lake Mac Libraries is calling for applications from community members interested in volunteering their time to help improve the digital literacy of older citizens. (Above: Mrs Cherie St Vincent at Cardiff Library)

Lifelong Learning Officer for Mature Aged Services Fiona Watson said volunteers would teach participants a variety of skills, from how to identify online scams to creating social media accounts.

Ms Watson said the program was an opportunity for different members of the community to collaborate in a fulfilling way for both participants and volunteers.

“Taking those first steps to understand computers and the internet can be incredibly isolating. The volunteers will be changing lives by helping people understand and connect,” Ms Watson said.

“That connection could be something as simple as being able to video-call a grandchild or join a social group on Facebook.”

The initiative, to be rolled out at libraries across Lake Macquarie, is part of the Australian government’s Be Connected campaign.

Volunteers will be asked to spend 2-3 hours a fortnight between Monday and Saturday working with participants. Each session will be tailored to fit participants’ experience level and interests.

“Each volunteer will be given digital mentor training as well as site-specific inductions,” Ms Watson said.

“We are looking for people who are passionate about empowering older Australians to thrive in a digital world.”

The programs are set to begin in March. Go to lakemac.com/volunteer for more information and to complete the volunteer application.
