#EachforEqual on International Women’s Day

A film charting one woman’s war as an environmental activist battling big industry will headline this year’s Lake Macquarie City Council International Women’s Day activities.

“Women at War’s female lead stands up for what she believes in - exactly the kind of woman we want to celebrate and recognise here in Lake Macquarie,” Lake Macquarie City Council CEO Morven Cameron said.

The theme for this year’s IWD is #EachforEqual, promoting the idea that an equal world is an enabled world.

“International Women’s Day is an important reminder of the continued effort needed to improve gender equality,” Ms Cameron said.

For Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser, International Women’s Day is an important celebration.

“Every year, Council makes sure to recognise IWD, and this year our film screening of Women at War perfectly encapsulates the #EachforEqual theme,” Cr Fraser said

The event will take place at Museum of Arts and Culture on Saturday 7 March from 6:30pm. Tickets cost $10 and include the film, nibbles and a glass of bubbles.

“The event is an opportunity for everyone in the community to raise awareness against inequality,” Cr Fraser said.

“We are all parts of the whole – our individual actions, conversations, behaviours and mindsets have an impact on larger society.”

The earliest IWD observance was held in 1909 to promote women entering the workforce. More than a century later, it continues to be a day to raise awareness of inequality as well as a celebration of the immense contribution women make in our community.

“There are more women than ever working in local government, which is essential for our communities to be represented equally,” Cr Fraser said.

Bookings for the 7 March film screening are essential and can be made online at www.humanatix.com.au
