In February 2019, Orica Kooragang Island (KI) will turn 50. To mark this significant milestone, the company is planning a special Family Open Day for past and present employees. General Manager Bertus De Villiers said the event would feature site tours, displays, kids’ activities and more.
“The 50th-anniversary family open day will not only be an opportunity to celebrate the site’s achievements but also an occasion where we can recognise and thank the people who have worked at the site.”
“Over five decades, the KI facility has been through a lot of change. In the past six years alone, more than $300 million has been spent on the biggest improvement program in the site’s history.”
“We encourage anyone who has ever worked at the Kooragang Island site to attend the event, see what’s changed and catch up with old colleagues,” said Mr De Villiers.
Orica Kooragang Island is an integral part of the company’s global operations and makes an important contribution to the local region. It also plays a key role in the New South Wales economy, supplying critical products to the mining and infrastructure, agriculture, water supply, food, dairy and medical sectors.
The facility includes an ammonia plant, three nitric acid plants, two ammonium nitrate plants and a product dispatch facility. Since operations began in 1969, it’s estimated the site has produced more than nine million tonnes of ammonia, nearly 10 million tonnes of nitric acid and more than 11 million tonnes of ammonium nitrate.
Orica Kooragang Island is also a significant employer in the Newcastle area, with approximately 150 permanent employees and around 40 regular contractors. During planned maintenance shutdowns there can be up to 400 extra workers on site.
Community investment and sponsorship activities are a central pillar of the site’s engagement approach. Orica aims to make a lasting and positive contribution to the community by supporting local initiatives and events. Last year, the company invested $272,000 in community sponsorships, grants and donations to help 42 local beneficiaries.
