A Whole New Way of Seniors Living Coming Soon to Newcastle

October 23, 2017

Cameron Glen is a new Supported Living village currently being built in Cameron Park, Newcastle. Supported Living is a fairly new concept in Seniors’ living in Australia. It combines all the best points of retirement village living with the best points of a traditional Aged Care facility.

Residents live in their own fully self-contained villa unit. This can be either one, two or three bedrooms, with either one or two bathrooms. Each unit has its own sunny, private rear courtyard. The villa units at Cameron Glen are being built to very high standards. All units come fully equipped with all appliances including air-conditioning, designer kitchens with granite benchtops, fully compliant Seniors bathrooms and high-quality finishes throughout. Onsite staff fully maintain the villa units and all the landscaped grounds.

All residents are encouraged to be as independent as they can be. That said, Nursing staff are on site and on call 24 hours day/7 days a week. The Care staff come to residents’ home as required.

Meals are available for lunch and dinner, seven days a week in the Community Centre dining room to those residents who require them. Paul Greenup, Director of Sunrise Supported Living, says that most of the residents of their other villages (located at Foster/Tuncurry) visit the Community Centre every day for lunch while others just occasionally.

“The choice is always theirs. The prices are extremely reasonable. A fully catered morning tea is served every day free of charge for all residents,” he said.

“The Community Centre offers many comfortable facilities, including a lounge area, library, television, games and activities and tea and coffee facilities. Friends and family are always welcome to pop in for visits, meals, family celebrations and to make use of the many facilities. The centres also have active event calendars for residents who love getting out and about. It is totally up to the residents how much they want to participate in the village activities. We also have weekly shopping trips and regular outings in the village bus,” said Mr Greenup.

Care staff on site 24/7 and while some of the residents don’t need any care at all, some just need a bit of a hand to get started in the morning like help with showering and getting dressed and medication supervision. As some residents may require a high level of care, Cameron Glen will be a fully accredited Approved Aged Care provider to facilitate access to Government Funded Home Care packages for residents.

In the past, elderly couples had to face the anguish of separation if one partner needed nursing home care. This is no longer the case since Cameron Glen will offer the capacity for couples to stay together in their own villa home in the village, even if they have different levels of care needs. This means that the partner who does not require care can still maintain an active social life knowing that the partner who does require care is being well looked after in the village by onsite carers while they are out.

“We find that it is often very beneficial for the partner who, in some cases have been fulltime caring for an ill partner, to have a bit of “me” time,” said Mr Greenup.

“Registered Nurses can prepare suitable care plans individually tailored to each residents’ health care requirements, including regular health checks; medication management; wound and skin care; special treatment regimes; palliative in-home care; nutrition monitoring; illness prevention, education and wellness programs; and pharmaceutical support and medication reminders.”

Cameron Glen is very different to any other Seniors’ Living complex. It offers the freedom and the independence of a retirement village with all the support of a traditional aged care facility.

“We believe that Seniors want to live and to be as independent as they possibly can be and to feel as though they are independent and we are there to support that desire. This is what makes Cameron Glen unique. Call 4958 8880 today for your Information pack.
