“It's glitz and glamour covered in lacquer, chrome, and mirrored finishes. Every detail is meant to convey luxury and there is always the feeling that people should look good in the design— particularly if they are wearing satin bathrobes and sipping a cocktail.” - Rochelle Greayer
Hollywood Glamour emerged in the 1930’s, and it was the American interior designers that set the décor of that era. The Golden years of Hollywood, beautiful movie sets depicted this style and these interiors were coveted by Hollywoods rich and famous – think Great Gatsby.
Who ever would have thought you would see parts of this look appearing in magazines
and furniture in 2017 and in Australia! Homegrown Australian designer Greg Natale gives a glimpse of how elements of Hollywood Lux can fit into a sophisticated room either subtly or bravely to achieve a luxurious theatrical interior (check out his stunning book in-store).
Furniture imported from American suppliers onto the Australian market are beautifully made and would bring a hint of Hollywood luxe to your home (insideout can source pieces to help with your look and make your style stand alone.)
Chandeliers, silver, gold, highly glossed furniture pieces, mirrored furniture, sunburst mirrors and bold contrasting patterns. Metal and glossed timber, combined in the one piece. Black and white stripes, zigzag and geometric patterns on floors or wallpaper. The look is bold sophistication.
Luxurious cushions, zebra hides and large gilt frames, on mirrors or photos, animal printed fabrics on an upholstered chair, chaise or ottoman and beautiful rugs. Are you getting the picture?
All the above are elements of Hollywood Glamour of that era but don’t make the mistake of putting all these elements in the same room today – today’s version is far simpler.
You can add just a few elements to a contemporary home. Just enough to give you a sophisticated look with a luxurious feel. Don’t go overboard. Minimal quality furniture pieces you will only buy once will shine when there isn’t clutter. We need the empty spaces in our interiors to enjoy our beautiful pieces.
If black and white are too much, choose grey and white stripes, zigzag pattern, mix in the metallic and high gloss furniture choices.
Layer up with plush rugs, art, wallpapers and large mirrors (they don’t need to be gilted). We have access to some luxurious looking coffee and side tables, a few of these and the refined hint of luxury can be yours. A bit of greenery using golden cane palms or banana trees, real or imitation will add a natural element.
Our homes are our havens to escape from the stress of our busy lives, give your home a feel you are comfortable in.
If you are downsizing, be brave and try Hollywood lux in your brand new apartment. And when you get home, slip into your silk dressing gown and pour a glass of champagne into a crystal wine glass!
