MARY POPPINS takes the stage

Metropolitan Players, the producers of “The Phantom of The Opera” and “Hairspray” invite you to let your imagination take flight as you step into the magical world of Mary Poppins.

Brilliantly adapted from the beloved books by Australia’s own P.L. Travers and the classic 1964 Walt Disney film, Mary Poppins features an impeccable local cast with spectacular sets and costumes and is directed by the very experienced Julie Black.

The production features all the best-loved songs from the movie including Chim-Chim-Cheree, A Spoonful of Sugar, Jolly Holiday, Step In Time, Feed The Birds and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and new classics like Practically Perfect and Anything Can Happen. Mary Poppins is a musical that will charm the whole family.

The jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces us to England in 1910 and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “anything can happen if you let it.”

This is the 33rd year that Julie has been directing for Metropolitan Players, having directed every production (except one) since 1983.

Mary Poppins is the seventh production for Metropolitan Players to be staged at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre and with an amazing swag of CONDA Awards and nominations behind them, it’s sure to be another winner. Last year’s production of Hairspray received a record 17 CONDA nominations and won 6 CONDAs for Musical, Director, Musical Director, Lead Actor in a Musical, Lead Actress in a Musical and Supporting Actress. No pressure Julie – but we’re expecting big things!

Mary Poppins has dazzled millions of people around the globe and now it is your chance to experience the magic right here in Newcastle. Mary Poppins will play at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre from August 5th to August 15th.
