LARA’S 10 EASY STEPS TO A NATURAL AND LONG-LASTING TAN
Step one: Get everything else out of the way
If you need to shave, wax, get a manicure or do a hair treatment, do so before you start the self-tanning process. All these treatments can remove or discolour your tan.
Step two: Exfoliate Dead or dry skin cells can leave dark patches from where the tan can’t be properly absorbed into the new skin. Use a loofah, exfoliating glove or dry brush before you get in the shower to shake off any dead skin cells, then use a gentle cleanser to buff the skin, focusing on knees, elbows, ankles and heels. Be sure to use a gentle exfoliator on your face too.
Step three: Dry off Make sure there’s no water residue and if you have just had a hot shower, wait until your body has returned to room temperature before doing anything else.
Step four: Moisturise Hydrating your skin will ensure your tan has a more even application and make it last longer. Moisturise with a lightweight water-based cream and wait 10 minutes for it to soak in. For your face, make sure you apply moisturiser around your nostrils or any other areas with folds or creases, like your chin or around your mouth.
Step five: Apply the tan to the body Using a Tanning Application Mitt, apply small amounts of the Instant Tan Mousse in a circular motion, starting from your ankles and working your way up to your shoulders, saving your arms and hands for last. This will eliminate the risk of streaks from bending over.
Step six: Apply the tan to the face For your face, apply a small of tan to the areas where you would naturally tan the most – forehead, the apples of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose and your chin – then blend outwards. Be extra careful around the nose and above the top lip – these areas pick up more colour because they tend to be drier.
Step seven: Pay attention to detail Using what’s left on your fingers, feather the tanner out into your hairline and past the jawbone. This will make your tan look natural by avoiding any distinct marks or obvious colour mismatches around those areas.
Step eight: Let it all soak in Allow your tan to dry before dressing, sweating or going in water and avoid applying any perfumes, deodorants or creams.
Step nine: Buff away If you do have any marks or streaks, squeeze half a lemon over the area and leave for 2–5 minutes before buffing with a towel.
Step ten: Upkeep To make your tan last, use gentle cleaners and moisturise frequently. You can also use the Gradual Tanning Lotion to extend the life of your tan and top up before your next application.
