The 2023 Newcastle Writers Festival opening night event on March 31 featuring Grace Tame has moved from Newcastle City Hall to the Civic Theatre due to high demand. As a result, more tickets are now on sale.

Festival director Rosemarie Milsom said everyone involved in the event was thrilled by the strong ticket sales. “Grace is a formidable person; someone we all admire. Her ability to connect with people is demonstrated by the overwhelming response to our event, which led to selling out City Hall in two weeks. I am relieved that people who thought they had missed out can now attend.”

Milsom added that the festival was experiencing strong ticket sales across the program and audiences appeared to be more comfortable attending in person. “Ticket sales for the 2022 event were still heavily affected by Covid and our audience was smaller than expected. I am relieved that people are showing their support and booking ahead. It’s very reassuring and I’m confident we’ll have a wonderful 10th anniversary.”

The festival will be held from March 31 to April 2 in venues in the Civic precinct. The main hub is University of Newcastle’s NUspace campus. There are more than 120 writers appearing in 75 free and ticketed events, including Tim Baker, Jane Harper, Craig Silvey, Norman Swan, Amy Thunig, and Pip Williams. Five events will be live streamed.
