Northstars take 3-1 win over Sydney Ice Dogs in 3rd McCormack Cup game

The Newcastle Northstars won their second consecutive game against the Sydney Ice Dogs in the McCormack Cup on Saturday night in a 3-1 victory.

Following a tense and scoreless first period, the Northstars scored twice - both goals orchestrated by the 19 year old dual national.

The Ice Dogs mounted a counter-attack in the third period, scoring one goal but putting the icing on the cake with a goal 1 minute before the final siren.

The win keeps the Northstars competitive with the Ice Dogs and Brave, their tally now two wins and one loss from their three games thus far in 2021.

Speaking after the game, Hawes credited Assistant Coach Ray Sheffield's first break speak for putting him into the right frame of mind for the second period, where he registered two points.

Sheffield had highlighted how a focus on their defence through the neutral zone had won them their last game against the Ice Dogs, and the Northstars were able to call on that to win another versus the Ice Dogs.
